Addy

We won an addy for a commercial I directed. Big thanks to Richter 7 for bringing the project to us.

I got to direct a spot for the University of Utah recently, Jared produced and Cole shot. Who knew the school is so accomplished? I guess our friends at Struck did. Thanks Brandon, Steve, Mike, and Lee for always keeping us in mind.

Cole and I went out on the road for a music video I directed for Brandi Carlile, Charlotte-Nashville-Athens will never be the same without us.
Last couple of weeks I got to film some stuff with John Legend and The Roots. It’s always a pleasure to film talented musicians, especially ones that look so cool. Thanks Aaron and Nate for the extra hands, and of course Saul and Targa at Columbia.

Promo News mentioned my video for Weeds in their year end list for 2009. It is an honor to be mentioned with such top notch directors and artists. Thanks!

Sky TV “West Bank” is being featured on several critically-acclaimed advertising websites including Ad Critic. As the most respected site in the industry, AdCritic.com features selected commercials and print work that are at the forefront of the creative world. Well done!
I went to the south a few weeks ago with Saul Levitz from Columbia Records to film some of Isaac Russell’s recording at Sweet Tea. That picture on the above left is of Saul, he is actually blurry in real life, it’s not the camera, he’s not just a label dude but a bad-a filmmaker too. There were some label execs there that have been around the music business for some time, it was really cool to hear stories of their personal experiences with iconic american musicians. Thanks Isaac, Saul, Jay, Don, and Dennis it was a blast.

Cole directed a gorgeous commercial for the Weather Channel a couple months ago. It’s in post now, we will update when it’s done. Thanks to Myron Nilsson and Rachel Stallings who lent their faces to the spot, it wouldn’t look so good without them.
The Joshua James video I directed for Weeds was released a couple months ago. Big thanks to Video Static and Promo News who both had kind words to say in their the posts. Also the video screened at Gallery 107 Shaw in Toronto, curated by Scott Cudmore, thanks Scott for seeking it out.

I directed a stop motion commercial last week for 360 Electrical, it was a fertilizing experience. Big thanks to Travis Cline who shot it and Gary Sume, Cynthia, and Ryan at Richter 7 for giving us a chance to produce it.

I spent some time with Davey VonBohlen, Dan Didier, and Scott Schoenbeck in Milwaukee a couple weeks ago. I am just starting a fun project with those guys. The Promise Ring is long gone but they continue to play music in Maritime and Dashboard Confessional, so check them out.

AK-47s, AR-15s, and lots of blank bullets; that was the recipe for Cole’s latest with SkyTV. Shot in the abandoned mine town of Silver City, UT, this thirty-second spot features a conflict between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants. As Saint Cloud’s most ambitious production to date, it required the crew to recreate a combat situation located in the West Bank. After two days of shooting and 1,400 rounds of blank ammunition, the spot looks to be unveiled at the beginning of the New Year. A special thanks to all the local crew, Preston Lee at Uber Content, Kim Bica at Arcade Edit and everyone else who contributed! The spot was produced by Jonas Sappington and Jared Harris. The director of photography was Travis Cline. Creative Directors, Chuck Tso and Scott Kaplan. Copywriter, Adam Kanzer.

As the only self-labeled “jock” of Saint Cloud, it’s only appropriate that Cole recently landed a series of spots and web content films for 2K Sports with the agency 72 and Sunny. The spots will air on the MLB Network and be featured on the 2K Sports website. Set to promote the release of the new video game MLB 2K10, the spots feature a number of stand-out professional baseball pitchers and hitters. Whether it’s been shooting in Scottsdale, AZ or Miami, FL the crew has enjoyed avoiding the Utah cold. The spots are being shot by Travis Cline and produced by Jared Harris. Executive Produced by Steve Wi at Uber Content.

A couple weeks ago I directed a spot for Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund, Jared produced and Cole shot it. It’s an organization that helps new businesses than aren’t able or interested in getting traditional business loans grow with just a little seed money. Their borrowers have some very moving and inspiring success stories.
Thanks Christopher and Kathy at UMLF to letting us work on this project. We had a great time working on it, fun crew and the easiest locations we’ve ever filmed at. The commercial is being edited now, look for it in a couple weeks.
I am filming with Isaac Russell tomorrow for Sony/Columbia Records. I will be filming with Isaac leading up to his album release on Columbia next year. If you are in Utah you should try and make it out to his show at Velour tomorrow night (Friday Sept 18).
Cole and I got to help our friends Steve Olpin and Tim Irwin with their behind the scenes doc for Jared Hess’ new film Gentlemen Broncos. Cole shot some and I edited some of them. The film looks very funny, that Sam Rockwell is a riot. And yes that really is Edgar’s normal voice. If you don’t know Steve and Tim’s work look them up, they are super cool documentary guys.

We filmed 4 segments for a National Geographic show about wild things people do. We lensed contortion, base jumping, artistic pool, and extreme unicycling. We even were schooled on the subject in some cases, a video of me doing some trick pool is coming.
Cole recently directed a spot for Wisk in New York with Lowe. Magic and Messiness/Cleanliness were involved, kids were the culprits…aren’t they always?
Even more exciting that getting out a stain, Cole was shortlisted for the Young Director Award in Cannes a couple months ago for his Kodak spot. Kudos dude!
Cole and I worked on our friend Chris Cutri’s documentary, Hanging Five, about surf artists. It has been generating quite the buzz at some big media outlets. If you are in Utah please come check out the film. If you are a non-Utahan keep an eye out for when it comes somewhere near you.
